Orders must be at least $10 to be delivered to you. If you are not a member, you may incur other charges, such as service charges, alcohol service charges, or heavy order charges.

It’s definitely a convenience, but Instacart is marking up its prices. Still, if you value your time more than your money, this service may be worth it. Plus, you’ll see all the charges before you pay for everything, so if you decide not to, you’ve wasted your time, but you also have a nice shopping list you can take to the store.

Tips for using grocery delivery services

Before you get too deep into online grocery delivery, you might want to remember a few rules of the road, according to Charles Thomas, a certified financial planner who owns Intrepid Eagle Finance in Clover, South Carolina. Besides being good with money, he does a decent amount of online groceries and has a few suggestions for shoppers.

Stay away from small orders. You’ll likely pay shipping costs if you make a small order, says Thomas. However, the larger the order, the less likely you are to pay extra.

Understanding Memberships. Some services are chargeable. “Membership fees can mean reduced delivery costs, so your household could benefit depending on your use of the service,” says Thomas.

Watch out for surcharges. Prices may differ if you purchase an item online or in store. “Some services mark up the price of a specific item over what you would pay in person at the same store. Not all markups are equal, so keep an eye out and don’t assume that prices are equal in all domains,” says Thomas.

Be deliberate when ordering. Consider when to schedule your delivery. “Timing is important,” says Thomas. “Some services charge for delivery based on when you order. Expect to pay more for Sunday evening delivery compared to Tuesday morning. In other words, when everyone is shopping, you might want to hold back and do your grocery delivery online when demand drops.
