Why Latvia has the best Christmas market deal: Capital Riga tops the list of best deals for festive shoppers along with other Eastern European cities

  • Brits who want to visit an onboard Christmas market have plenty of options
  • Traveling further east to Riga, Latvia could save holidaymakers hundreds
  • Zagreb, Croatia, and Krakow, Poland are other cheap options this winter

If you’re hoping to visit a Christmas market this year, you might want to try further east.

Because Latvia is the best value for money for a winter shopping spree, Swiss Post has found.

The capital, Riga, tops the list of cheap destinations, costing around £507 for a two-night break.

Zagreb in Croatia finished second, while Krakow in Poland came third.

Meanwhile, Vienna in Austria turned out to be the most expensive city in the survey, costing over £920 for just two nights.

The Christmas Market Barometer compared costs across 12 European cities, looking at expenses such as return flights, food and accommodation.

The Post Office’s Nick Boden said the short breaks are a “convenient way to spend a holiday abroad” at a lower cost.

He added: ‘Budget-conscious Brits who do their holiday homework can potentially save hundreds of pounds by choosing a city like Riga.’

Michael Budge, Head of Atol at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: “Anyone looking to kick off their festive season by visiting a European Christmas market should check that their trip is Atol protected. “

“If they book flight and accommodation as part of a package, they can have peace of mind knowing that they will get a refund if their tour operator goes bankrupt, or if they are already abroad, they will be repatriated at no additional cost. When booking holidays, UK consumers should look for the Atol logo in their travel agent’s brochures, advertisements and websites.
